WATERFALLS of litchfield

Litchfield National Park is home to an impressive collection of waterfalls, including Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, and Tolmer Falls. Each waterfall has its own unique charm and beauty. Florence Falls is a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling, with crystal clear waters and a stunning backdrop of rugged cliffs. Wangi Falls is also a favourite among visitors, boasting a large swimming hole and an impressive cascade of water. Tolmer Falls, on the other hand, is known for its stunning views and its popularity as a spot for bird watching. These waterfalls offer plenty of opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the park, making it a popular choice for tours from Darwin.

Wangi Falls

A hugely popular swimming spot, Wangi Falls has two misty waterfalls filling the huge swimming hole. The waterfalls create a natural plunge pool in the rock formations which you can climb up to. Don’t forget to check out Wangi falls walk with viewing platform from the top so you can see the stunning waterfalls from different angles.

Florence falls

Climbing the 160 steps down to Florence falls is worth it to relax in the pristine plunge pool created by the waterfall. Or you can take a short walk through shady creek and take a dip in the small rock pools.

Buley Rockhole

Definitely a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors alike. With a number of rock pools connected together by small waterfalls, Buley Rockhole has something for everyone to enjoy all year round. Chill in a quiet plunge pool with lower cascades like you are at a natural spa or find a deeper swimming hole to dive and swim beneath the water.

Tolmer falls

One of the most stunning Litchfield national park waterfalls, Tolmer Falls is worth a visit even though swimming is not permitted. The upper cascades of the waterfall plunge over the rocky escarpments into Tolmer Falls plunge pool and is really spectacular to explore the area.

Cacades

Taking the high road or low road here can make all the difference.  The UPPER CASCADES walk will see you climbing a fair bit of open woodland on sandstone , shale slopes.  This works well for the tan but can be a bit draining if you try this in the middle of the day.  It will however result in some great views out to the west from the top of the escarpment you will now be standing on.

Taking the track via LOWER CASCADES is a different game altogether.  Moving through cool monsoonal forest you follow the creek and for part of the way even doing a bit of rock hoping until you come face to face with Curtain Falls … from there it is a short trot to the upper cascades area.

Tip 1: For the fit and enthusiastic … do the loop. For the not so … stick to the lower cascades.

Tip 2: Temperatures can be 10 degrees hotter when the sun comes out and you are standing on the sandstone cliffs as compared to the shady valley below.

Tip 3: Not for people with mobility constraints or carrying large heavy eskies.

Green Ant / Tjaetaba Falls

Appreciating Green Ant / Tjaetabe Falls will require a commitment of time and effort.  The A 2.7 km round trip will see you move though scenic tropical monsoonal forest fringing Green Ant Creek before climbing up a steady hill to the falls themselves. Above the falls is the destination of choice … a small infinity pool big enough for about 8 people comfortably.  Looking over the edge of the pool at the valley below and into the distance is the way too enjoy this spot.  Historically this has been a quiet place with not many visitors however in recent times its popularity has grown.

TIP 1: Early morning and late afternoon are the best times.

TIP 2 : Do not bother if the car park has more than 5 cars.  To busy.

Tjaynera / Sandy Creek Falls

Tjaynera Falls, also known as Sandy Creek Falls, is a beautiful waterfall located in the southern part of the park. The waterfall features a series of cascading falls that lead into a large pool, which is perfect for swimming. The surrounding area is also home to a variety of wildlife, making it a great place to spot native animals.

Accessible off the sealed road by 4WD only, Tjaynera falls / Sandy creek falls are worth the trip. You can camp next to the swimming hole and enjoy a quiet visit even in the high season.

Surprise Creek Falls

Surprise, this is also accessible by 4WD only and a short walk to get to. But once there, you can jump off rocks into the peaceful plunge pool or climb up to the upper cascade for a dip in the tranquil and natural “infinity pool”.
